LCD vs Plasma

LCD Is Slightly Better

Nearly every new television sold is either plasma or LCD.  You can’t even find retailers that sell older projection models anymore.  Why?  The price has come down a lot due to mass volume being sold.

Why LCD Wins Out Most of the Time

Picture Quality

Television picture quality is probably the most important thing.  How the colors appear on the screen is what makes the television “work” for you.  LCD colors are brighter and these sets take on fewer glares due to their anti-reflective properties.  Additionally there are more pixels per square inch on LCD.  They are truly higher definition.
You can really tell the quality of a television by looking at peoples faces.  Some brands produce brighter colors/contrast than other brands.  Sometimes the face can be slightly blurred or harder to see clearly because of the darkness of the colors.  Sony and Samsung are the top performing brands. Proponents of plasma always bring up the fact that LCD television is harder to see at an angle.  This fact is true, but it is also true that most people sit directly in front of the screen.  I don’t know many people that watch television from a sharp angle.  Therefore this fact doesn’t matter to most of us.
Plasma does have a better contrast ratio and darker blacks.  Most people say that plasma is a more colorful set to watch under dim lighting.  Once again, most of us use our television for daytime, dusk, and for movies.  In nearly all cases, the LCD television wins out.  If you use your television almost exclusively for movies in the dark, then, by all means, a plasma television is the best choice.

Reliability

LCD is considered to be the most reliable.  Plasma television is known to be somewhat fragile to move and in high altitudes.  You can even buy special plasma that is more expensive for high altitude.
LCD is known to last nearly twice as long as plasma sets.  Plasma television sets continue to greatly improve in quality.  You may think that it doesn’t matter that LCD lasts longer because they both last long enough.  This isn’t rally true because the plasma will deteriorate in color brightness much sooner.  What this means is a much sooner degraded picture that will be quite noticeable about halfway through the life of the television.

Showroom floors always set the contrast ratio and brightness to a maximum.  If you read the instructions, you will find that you should turn the brightness down so as to not burn out the set prematurely.

Burn In

Plasma is known to have burn in images.  This is why computers always have LCD monitors.  Burn in images can be cause by a video game image may stay in the background of the screen forever. This can be very annoying.
Proponents of plasma state that their technology has improved to the point that burn in is not an issue.  However, do you really want to test this on your $2,000.00 television?  If they start offering plasma computer monitors, I might believe plasma won’t have burn in.

Weight and Size

LCD is thinner and lighter than plasma.  That makes it easier to mount on the wall and easier to move.  This isn’t a great reason to buy LCD, but it’s one more reason LCD is the best.

Power Consumption

LCD uses less power and does not get as hot as plasma television.

Tuner

LCD has a built in high definition tuner card.  Plasma television will require you to purchase an external tuner device.  Keep this in mind as part of the cost that you will be required to incur in the future.
